Project Ujima is a mentoring program that targets youth between the ages of 11-17 who has an incarcerated parent.  This program seeks to reduce at-risk behavior in youth such as drug use, teen pregnancy, school drop-out, and other delinquent social behaviors.  Through strengthening self-identify, positive life choices, core cultural values as well as collective work and responsibility, we provide another means of self-development and expression.  Teaching youth positive self-esteem, self-worth, self-responsibility, and academic excellence, our youth will have a stronger sense of their role as well as their responsibility in the family and community.

 Project Ujima offers mentoring and tutoring that will foster a positive relationship between the youth and their mentor.  Through this development, we seek to reduce internal symptoms such as low self-esteem and depression.  In addition, we seek to minimize external symptoms such as fighting, bullying and drug efficacy.

 Objectives

  • To develop in youth the skills necessary to refrain from problematic and illegal behaviors;

  • To increase academic interest and achievement;

  • To increase cultural pride and interest

  • To elevate consciousness in youth about the effects of racism, discrimination, sexism, abuse and violence;

  • To assist youth in developing and enhancing communication;

  • To assist youth in developing and enhancing communication, negotiation, conflict resolution, and violent reduction skills.
